Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to complete a deal in signing Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on the final day of the summer transfer window.

According to Goal.com, the England international is not favoured by the Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal who wants to send him away from Old Trafford for a short term. The 23-year-old has already lost his place in United's starting lineup.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager prefers skipper Wayne Rooney and Dutch international Robin van Perise to lead United's attack for this season. This has seen Welbeck drop down the pecking order.

Van Gaal has already had a dialogue with the England striker and had earlier refused to shed light on the conversation he had with his player.

"I know what I said to Danny and Danny knows exactly what I said to him," Van Gaal explained.

"I assume that Danny Welbeck is not saying anything about our conversation and also in that conversation was [the assistant manager] Ryan Giggs and he doesn't say [anything] either, and that is the way it should be."

Since then, several clubs have been interested in landing Welbeck. Injury to Olivier Giroud has seen Arsenal reportedly join Tottenham in landing the Red Devils' striker before the window shuts on Monday.

In addition to this, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Hull City have all made an approach in securing a deal for Welbeck.

However, the player has set his sights on making a switch to White Hart Lane. Mauricio Pochettino is an admirer of the United striker due to his pace and versatile style of either playing as a central striker or on the wide positions.

Tottenham and United are close to reaching an agreement, which would see the north London club spend around £2m for the loan deal. The White Hart Lane outfit are willing to pay Welbeck's full salary during his time at the club.

A move to Tottenham could see Welbeck get more playing time under his belt. The England striker would be hoping to impress Van Gaal during his loan spell with Pochettino's side.
