chicago homes for sale

2119 W. LeMoyne St. Chicago, Ill.

A historic greystone mansion in the heart of Wicker Park has put on the market with a list price of $1.6 million. The nine-bedroom home, which comes complete with a “spite wall,” was put up for sale after a proposal to add a second home on the property was denied by city officials.

The current owner of the property, local developer Michael Lerner, had been trying since March to add a second single-family home on the lot’s side yard. However, DNAinfo Chicago reports city officials ruled the yard was a “protected historic landscape” and denied the request after hearing concerns from neighbor and alderman.

The mansion, located at 2119 W. LeMoyne St., was built in the 1890’s. There are seven bathrooms in the main house, and a separate two-story coach house and studio apartment. The parking area for the property can accommodate six cars. The listing notes “this is a unique opportunity to own an original greystone mansion in the heart of Wicker Park.”

As for that “spite wall,” it is described as being “a massive stone wall” that was built to shield the home from neighbors that were feuding at the time, DNAinfo Chicago reports. It’s certainly a unique aspect to the mansion and helps add to its historic nature.
