Glamourous celebrities will be attending the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, which will take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on 24 August.

Over the years, the MTV Video Music Awards night has seen a number of celebrities in sophisticated gowns and some others in crazy ensembles.

American actress/singer Rose McGowan made some risky red carpet choices and wore a string dress to the 15th Annual MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles in 1998.

The following year, rapper Lil' Kim made jaws drop when she hit the red carpet in a half-topless purple jumpsuit with a nipple pastie and matching wig.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga's meat dress from 2010 MTV Video Music Awards garnered a lot of attention from media, fans and PETA.
