Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo Raid

Liverpool have already added a whole swathe of new players to their squad during the summer transfer window, but they are reportedly set for two more with the addition of a pair of full-backs.

Long-term left-back target Alberto Moreno is reportedly close to a move to Anfield, along with Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo, per Chris Wheeler in the Daily Mail:

Liverpool will take their summer spending past £100million after chief executive Ian Ayre flew to Spain to complete the signings of Alberto Moreno and Javi Manquillo. They are understood to be close to agreeing a £20m fee with Sevilla for their 22-year-old left back and Ayre is expected to negotiate a two-year loan for Atletico Madrid right back Manquillo. It will include an agreement to sign the 20-year-old in a permanent £6m deal.

Moreno looked to be one that got away from Liverpool, the Anfield outfit's interest in the Sevilla defender reported as far back as May per the Liverpool Echo's Kristian Walsh, only for negotiations to stall.

However, it seems the deal for the Spanish international is now back on and he would be a key addition for the Reds who were forced to play Jon Flanagan out of position at left-back for the majority of last season.

Moreno was a key part of Sevilla's Europa League win last season, a vital experience for the youngster considering Liverpool's Champions League adventure this season.

Manquillo played only three times as Atletico won La Liga in 2013-14 but he looks a fine prospect who will challenge Glen Johnson for his spot.

As well as being strong going forward—a requirement for a modern full-back—he seems more resilient in defence than the Englishman and solidity at the back is a must after the Reds let in 50 goals last season in the Premier League.

The news comes as no surprise given that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers had expressed the need for more additions to the squad, per Rick Metzroth on ESPN FC:

We still have some pieces that we want to fill from the squad so that by the August we'll be strong. There's players to go forward with, so yeah, there's still some business to do.

He has already made six new signings this season but—aside from Dejan Lovren—they have all been attacking purchases as the Northern Irishman looks to replace the departed Luis Suarez.

New defenders are a must and the addition of both Moreno and Manquillo—along with Lovren—would make for a more stable defence than last season, per the Mirror's Alex Watt, as well as adding much-needed depth ahead of a busy season including domestic and European football:

Rodgers is putting together what looks to be an exciting squad with youth a key factor in many of his deals.

Moreno and Manquillo's arrivals would mean Liverpool have bolstered all their key areas in a very busy summer, but they will inevitably lack experience going into next season. The new signings will also likely take time to bed in.

However, the Reds have made quality additions who will likely be at Anfield for the long-term, thus the future of the squad looks a very stable one.
