Two years ago Alan Pardew had a good look at Fraser Forster during our pre-season games, before sanctioning a £2M move to Celtic, where he had been on loan the previous season and had played very well.
Fraser Forster – now worth £9M?
In the two years since Fraser signed on at the Scottish powerhouse the 26 year-old has played well and gained attention due to some great displays in the Champions League, and the 6’7″ giant was one of the three goalkeeper sin England’s World Cup squad in Brazil although he didn’t play.
Fraser joined Newcastle in 2005 (when he was 17) from Wallsend Boys Club, and he made it clear he didn’t want to be sitting on the bench at Newcastle, and Pardew made the decision that Tim Krul was the better goalkeeper and so he let Fraser leave.
But news over the weekend that Southampton have had a £6M bid turned down by Celtic, and the news is they will go in with an increased bid of £9M.
£9M for a guy who we got £2M for a short two years ago will raise some eyebrows on Tyneside – did we underestimate this Hexham-born goalkeeper?
Fraser didn’t play particularity well in pre-season two years ago, and we have to think – given the circumstances – the Newcastle manager made the right call in letting him go.
Fraser has played 195 times for Celtic and twice for England, but he never played in a competitive game for his home town club Newcastle United.
With previous loans at Stockport County, Bristol Rovers and Norwich City, he has already played 248 first team games so far in his career.
What do you think?

Comment #2It’s all about the ‘sell on’ clause for us.
We wont see him back here any time soon, well not playing FOR us anyways.
Good luck to the Lad.
Another one that got away.
We have a good history of this at NUFC 🙁

Comment #3Ed…only one keeper can play. We had two good keepers.
The question who should be asking is, why did we sell him for £2M with including clause where we would get 40-50% of the profit from a future sale?

Thing is, would he have gotten into the team ahead of Krull? It was probably the best thing for his career to go and get top quality first team footy. Otherwise he may have become Harper mkII

Comment #9Ed, stop asking rhetorical questions. The club is running by morons. Of course they underestimate some of the players. Poor judgement is kind of job at Newcastle United.

Comment #10Markacus – Was Harps wrong to stay as No2 for so many years ?
He was settled at a club he loved after all.

Comment #11Forster would appear to be a good keeper but whether he justifies a £9m price tag only a full season in the Premier League will tell. Being a keeper in Scotland especially for either Celtic or Rangers I guess is not too stressful given the poor opposition.
We were right to sell him as he was never going to replace Krul. Also it is good for him as he has progressed and now has new opportunities.

knowing the owner is a tight arse and sell on clauses are free cash i cant believe there isn’t one
but as we only do stuff half arsed there prob isn’t as i bet we looked at small fee in and wages saved and not future resale
although it was obvious he was gonna get an England call so his value would have gone up
i would like to see him in the prem and see if he that good

You can look at Harper two different ways:
1. Loyal servant to Newcastle
2. Lack of ambition.

Comment #14I spoke to a former Toon keeper about twelve months ago at a charity dimner.
The reason or the main reason they chose Krul over big fraz was if either of them made a mistake during a game that resulted in a goal it would play on big fraz mind when Krul had the mental strength to forget about it and get on with the game. Long term they thought Krul would be the more complete keeper
This is what I was told.

Comment #17Not just another one who got away, but another one who got away CHEAPLY!!
Cabaye,Debuchy – total circa £31m, then we see the fees for Lovren and Chambers!
Ashley loves to buy ‘cheap’ but he sells too cheap.
A man who knows the cost but not the value!!!!

Comment #19Another poor decision by the club. Another local talent let go and who should have been given a better chance. Seems to be habit of our poor management.
