Louis van Gaal continues his fledgling career as Manchester United manager on Saturday as the Red Devils face Roma for the start of their International Champions Cup campaign in Denver.

After thrashing LA Galaxy 7-0 in their first pre-season friendly, United face a much tougher challenge against the Serie A outfit at the Sports Authority Field.

The Dutchman will likely be looking to experiment with his side as he works out his best team ahead of the new Premier League season.

Roma finished last season's Serie A campaign second to champions Juventus by 17 points. United finished the 2013-14 Premier League in seventh, 22 points back from winners Manchester City.

Thus, Saturday's encounter in what will be a toasty Denver should be relatively evenly matched as the two sides prepare for the start of their respective league seasons.

While United trounced Galaxy, Roma come into the match after beating Liverpool 1-0 in a friendly at Fenway Park.

Chelsea's former star, Ashley Cole, is likely to play a part for Roma, having recently moved to the Italian side, which still contains the attacking threat of veteran Francesco Totti.

The pair linked up nicely against the Reds to create a couple of opportunities, but it was eventually Marco Borriello who broke the deadlock in Boston.

Despite the win, boss Rudi Garcia will want a more convincing performance against United, as Roma were fairly fortunate to beat the Reds.

For United, it is highly unlikely there will be a repeat of the Red Devils' famous 7-1 victory over Roma at Old Trafford in 2007 in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Van Gaal's team selection will be interesting to see, as he is likely to want to try out several players while still getting a good result.

The Dutchman will be looking to the likes of Wayne Rooney—who bagged a brace against LA—to perform once again as he will no doubt be hoping for the 28-year-old to play a big part next season.

Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck—often overlooked last season by David Moyes—has a fantastic opportunity to stake a claim for regular first-team football and will be looking to impress against Roma.

It is likely that Van Gaal will start with something close to his strongest team—as he did in California—and then switch out several players during the game.

United fans will be eager to get another look at new signing Ander Herrera, who was the star of the show last time out, per The Times' James Ducker:

Perhaps unlike previous years, a strong pre-season is very important for United as they look to build some confidence ahead of the new term after the debacle of 2013-14.

The Manchester outfit and Van Gaal face a tough test against Roma, and a win would provide a terrific boost with matches against Inter Milan and Real Madrid also to come in pre-season.

The Red Devils looked impressive against the LA Galaxy but will need to show in Denver that they are capable of performing against one of Europe's top sides.
