Cop sentenced to five years

Police Constable Orlando Lamont has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for the shooting death of 32-year-old Everton Parchment of Arnett Gardens, St Andrew.

Lamont, 37, was found guilty last week of manslaughter, but Justice Glen Brown put off sentencing until yesterday.

Parchment was shot during a police spot check on Spanish Town Road, Kingston, on the night of April 3, 2010. Parchment and relatives were returning from a wedding reception in Portmore, St Catherine, at the time of the incident.

The Crown, represented by Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn and Crown Counsel Kerri Ann Kemble, led evidence in the Home Circuit Court that Lamont was negligent in the handling of his firearm.

Attorney-at-law Anthony Pearson said Lamont was going to appeal against his conviction. Pearson made a bail application, but Justice Brown said he should make such an application before a judge at the Court of Appeal.
