Even the trailer for “Fifty Shades of Grey” is causing a ruckus.
The Parents Television Council and Morality in Media have both blasted the trailer, which was released Thursday, saying it was inappropriate, according to TheHollywoodGossip.com
I’m sure the studio will write an apology note and get right on editing out all the filthy stuff. A love story for the ages like that doesn’t need it anyway.
The groups seem to be really upset that NBC’s “Today” show debuted the preview.
“We’re talking about basically the equivalent of a dime-store trashy romance novel. Essentially, (Today) is promoting what people refer to as ‘mommy porn.'” PTC director of grass-roots education and advocacy Melissa Henson said.
It must be tough to be a mommy.
She also reportedly used the term “poor judgment.”
I doubt anyone at the movie studio will be using that term once the movie premieres and they start backing up the Brinks trucks.
Henson said because parents often have morning news shows on with children in the room, NBC should have “couched it” with a very strong disclaimer.
Right. Something like, “Parents should be warned that the following clip may expose children to what will likely be a really bad movie.”
She also said it’s a movie “that’s romanticizing violence in relationships … sexual violence is basically what this movie is promoting.”
I guess, in her home, they don’t have one of those “remote control” things that allows someone to actually turn off their TV.
Morality in Media, a group advocating for education against pornography, also had something to say about the trailer.
“The popularity of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ among women sends a message to men that this is what women really want,” said the group’s director Dawn Hawkins. “Even more dangerous, it also sends the message to women that they can ‘fix’ violent, controlling men by being obedient and loving. A warning to the women lining up to see this film: There is nothing empowering about whips and chains or humiliation and torture.”
She probably has no idea how many tickets she sold for that movie just by saying that.
“Is this really the kind of relationship we want our daughters, relatives and friends willingly entering into?” Hawkins reportedly said. “With a stalker and a batterer? Do we really want our sons to become Christian Greys, practicing a violent masculinity that degrades men as well?”
