Amnesty International Demands Decriminalization of Abortion throughout Latin America

By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, Latin America Correspondent

October 1, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Amnesty International has issued a press release demanding the legalization of abortion throughout Latin America.

“All regulations should be repealed that sanction or permit the imprisonment of women and children who seek or obtain an abortion under any circumstance,” said Amnesty International (AI) through its affiliate in Asunción, Paraguay.

Claiming that it is “shameful” that Latin Americans continue to prohibit the killing of unborn children, AI added that “the penalization of abortion denies to pregnant women and children the medical attention they need. This shows a cruel indifference towards their physical and psychological well-bring, and the absence of human dignity that the penalizing of abortion condemns them to suffer.”

Magaly Llaguno, leader of Human Life International’s Hispanic division, told LifeSiteNews that she regarded it as “inconceivable that an organization that claims to be a defender of human rights is trying to require our Hispanic countries to legalize the slaughter of their future citizens.”

“Amnesty International declared that its objective is the ‘respect and protection of the human rights of women and children.’ How can this organization overlook the right to life of unborn children, the principle human right without which other rights can’t exist?”

Although AI was founded to defend those imprisoned for political crimes, it eventually expanded its activities and began to promote a leftist political agenda internationally. In 2007, AI added the legalization of abortion to the list of “human rights” that it demands of foreign countries.
