Police left a bait car running along Central Avenue Saturday night. They said the man who stole it tried to scare off officers with an electric guitar during the subsequent arrest.VIDEO: APD Man tries to get out of stolen car arrest using guitarLt. Paul Szych set up the operation. He said police were trailing the man, paralleling him and getting into position as a police helicopter followed overhead.Jaybert Mexicano was unaware the car he just stole was rigged to stop accelerating and that he was being filmed, according to police. Police cut the power as Mexicano tried to get on a highway.“He was able to steer it and hit the brakes,” said Szych. “The only thing that stops working is the engine.”Police said after he was surrounded, he refused to put his hands up and surrender. Instead, he hid his IDs in the air vents and picked up an electric guitar police placed as a prop in the back seat and began swinging it at the officers around him.“You see him grab the guitar, and present it in a weapons-like fashion, which very well could've been his full intent,” said Szych, while watching video of the incident.About 15 minutes later, police said Mexicano gave up fighting. He was placed under arrest and charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.Szych said other than Mexicano barricading himself in the car, the arrest went smoothly.Police had K-9 officers and beanbags ready, but neither tactic was needed.Mexicano has a criminal history that includes DWI and battery on a peace officer.
