A $41 million project that includes wider roads, medians and a new interchange at Interstate 75 will address heavy traffic and high crash rates on Windy Hill Road prior to the Atlanta Braves stadium opening nearby in 2017, reports the Marietta Daily Journal.

The project involves a 1.43-mile stretch from Cobb Parkway to Powers Ferry Road.

The MDJ adds the project will be funded by a 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, the Cumberland Community Improvement District, the Georgia Department of Transportation and $1 million coming from grants by the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, according to Jim Wilgus, Cobb Department of Transportation deputy director.

Chairman Tim Lee said the need for improvements was seen far in advance of the announcement the Braves are moving to Cobb County. Design work has been underway since 2011, he added.

The I-75 intersection with Windy Hill Road was ranked by Cobb DOT as the site in Cobb with the highest crash rates, the MDJ reported.
