Pac-12 Conference Looks to ‘Expand Its Reach’ To A Game in Mexico City?

Could the Oregon Ducks or another Pac-12 team be headed south of the border to take on a Big-12 team in the future? The answer is yes, but it may be a few years before it happens.

Dennis Dodd from CBS Sports is reporting that ESPN has had discussions about playing a game in Mexico City with both the Pac-12 Conference and the Big-12 Conference. Of course these are early discussions. No dates or teams were mentioned according to Dodd, but it does make sense.

The Pac-12 Conference it chuck full of talented teams on the field and overall is becoming one of the most competitive conference in the country. If your looking to expand your reach, Commissioner Larry Scott is taking it in the right direction. Scott has already announced plans to expand conference reach in China with a college basketball game between Washington and Texas to be played there in November of 2015. When you have other sports competing in a global scale it can only help College sports to do the same.

In the National Football League this season, as in the last few, two teams the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions will face off this season in London. In college football the Penn State Nittany Lions out of the Big-10 will take on the University of Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland to begin the 2014 season. So the Pac-12 Conference is right to do the same. Of course no one knows what teams would be considered if the game in Mexico City does take place, let alone the date for it. Right now I would think not before 2016, if at all.

Preliminary talk is a good thing and many times leads to more discussion. Of course by then the college football landscape may change slightly as well. The good teams this year may not be the ones that are ‘that’ good next. The idea is something to certainly keep in the back of your mind moving forward. When we live in a world of need to know ‘now’ news, playing a college football game in another country may not seem like that big of a deal, but for the teams involved the exposure on and off the field along with the fans and those watching depending on the teams it could be as big as a Bowl game atmosphere and is always something to look forward to.
