Jackson State Snaps Lions' Five-Game Win Streak

Southeastern surrenders six unearned runs

Box Score

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State responded to Southeastern Louisiana's five-run, seventh-inning rally with four runs of its own Tuesday, defeating the Lions 12-6 at Robert "Bob" Braddy, Sr. Field.

Southeastern (27-14) committed four errors, surrendering six unearned runs, en route to having its five-game winning streak snapped by the Tigers (25-19).

The Lions scored a run in third without the benefit of a hit. JSU starter Aneko Knowles hit Kyle Cedotal with a pitch to lead off the inning. Cedotal moved up to second base when the shortstop knocked down, but was unable to make a play on, Jacob Williams' grounder up the middle. Jacob Seward laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Knowles threw wildly to first and Cedotal scored from second on the play.

Knowles (3-0) kept Southeastern in check despite battling control issues. The right-hander did not allow a hit in six innings of work, but walked five and hit another four batters while earning the win.

Falling behind 7-1 after five innings, the Lions encountered a 15-plus minute delay heading to the bottom of the sixth. An off-campus fire caused a power surge that temporarily knocked out power in the athletic complex. Play resumed once the lights returned to full power.

Southeastern then rallied for five runs in its next turn at bat. Cedotal and Williams each drew walks to open the inning, forcing Knowles from the contest. Following a wild pitch, Seward grounded out to second and Cedotal scored. Sam Roberson smacked single up the middle, the Lions' first hit of the game, to drive in Williams. Reliever Brandon Gregory hit Jameson Fisher with a pitch, putting a pair on for Andrew Godbold.

Godbold crushed his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot, to straight-away center to pull the Lions within one run.

JSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, tacking on a final run in the eighth.

Southeastern travels to Huntsville, Texas, this coming weekend for a three-game series with Sam Houston State before returning home, April 29, to host the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
