Coastguard rescue teams were put on alert after a light aircraft coming in to land at Liverpool Airport reported engine problems.

Liverpool Coastguard said New Brighton RNLI and Hoylake RNLI and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service's Marine Rescue Unit were on stand-by after the alarm was raised at 1.30pm today.

A spokesman said the plane, which had six passengers on board, was able to land safely.

The ECHO understands it was on a medical flight from Belfast which was due to land at Biggin Hill airport in London for Great Ormond Street hospital.

A one-day-old baby and parents were among the passengers on board, and the family is believed to have been taken to Alder Hey Hospital after the flight landed in Liverpool.

A spokesman for Liverpool John Lennon Airport confirmed a full emergency was declared, as is standard procedure, but the plane landed safely and emergency services were later stood down.

New Brighton lifeboat was also called out at 1pm after a report of a fire onboard a vessel heading to Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead from the Gwynt y Mor offshore windfarm.

Liverpool Coastguard said the boat was found to have a problem with its exhaust which had set off smoke alarms.
