based on the beauty, fragility and complexity of ice crystal formations, the ‘winter tide’ lamp series is a collaboration between two recent royal college of art graduates, dagny rewera and lucy norman. capturing the magical, recurring transformation of this phenomenon observed in nature, the crystallized glass collection is hand blown in london. formed using the light’s temperature fluctuations, the changing state of the ice is choreographed like a substance enclosed in the glass. as the bulb heats up, the material begins to thaw, gradually revealing the ‘hot heart’ of the lamp as the ice crystals slowly disappear. the light source eventually changes into a cold one, which triggers the clear, melted liquid to start freezing once more. over time, crystals form and expand across the glass, generating an elaborate network of forms. each pattern is similar to a snowflake, in that no two are ever the same, making the object one of a kind at every cycle. ‘winter tide’ has been showcased at istanbul design week as part of the ‘no borders’ exhibition.
