        Must have for Video/3D/Media editors

        Must have for Video/3D/Media editors
The Razer Nostromo is perfectly designed in my option, easy to press, no stick buttons, reliable contacts, excellent Key assignment program and automatic key-mapping or transition when you activate other programs. I formerly used the older Belkin Nostromo which had similar functionality but the buttons were sticky and unreliable. I also have the Razer Orb Weaver Chroma which has more buttons but no scroll wheel and I’ll say more about shortly. For my needs this version with scroll wheel is best. Its versatility shows when used with programs involving lots of keyboard shortcuts. For me that’s 3D Graphics, Video editing, Photo editing, music editing and 3D games. Examples: for 3D graphic editors (Cinema 4D, IClone, Carrara, Daz Studio, SketchUp) I setup the buttons to do the same functions for each program (even though the actual keyboard short cuts are different for each). Extremely helpful. For Video, animations and music editing (Vegas, HitFilm, ACID, IClone), the scroll wheel can move and adjust the Play Head while you’re composing and trimming your clips. Your regular mouse scroll wheel zooms into and out of the timeline (a god send). The Nostromo buttons to control edits, cuts, deletes and the thumb “D” pad to control Play/Stop/Reverse.Since the Razer Nostromo stopped being available last year I bought the Razer Orb Weaver Chromo for my other computer. Also a great device with user assignable colors for each key, BUT… no scroll wheel, so its not as intuitive for play-head editing as the Nostromo.Key Assignments:It’s a mistake to try and assign every keyboard shortcut to the Nostromo keypad before you actually use it. Instead find the PC keyboard short-cuts you use the most, and assign them to the Nostromo (might be as simple as CTRL, ALT, Undo, Redo, Save for Media programs). Use your Index and Middle fingers for most frequently used keys (reduces fatigue). As you start using those you’ll have to go back to your PC keyboard for other things… now start putting those on the Nostromo. After a short while you’ll have trained yourself on the device, and the need for jumping to the PC keyboard virtually eliminated.TRICKS:I found my hand would get lost from its, lets call it the “Home Position”, on the Nostromo (and Orb Weaver) but I found the perfect solution. Cut small button-sized strips of Velcro and put them into an arrangement that’s easy for your fingers to sense. With the right set of Velcro felt, prickly and no Velcro, your hand will automatically find its place on the keyboard and starts associating the “feel” of the key with the function used. Works amazingly well (see picture).

Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2013
As you can see from my title and score of the Nostromo I am very very happy with this Pad.

It is made for the left hand and is suitable for right handed persons. eg. those using a mouse in the right hand and the Nostromo with the left hand.

The packaging is secure and well thought out. Easy to open and extract the product.

The build of the Nostromo is great! solid feel and not flimsy in any manner. The feel/angle of the switches and the contour of the device takes the strain off of the wrist and hand in general and lets one play for hours before needing to take a break.

Installing the Nostromo was painless and uncomplicated from start to finish.
Download and install the drivers from razerzone.com (Support Downloads)
        Restart System
Plug in the Nostromo and start the software.

There is a step to install the firmware loader but mine came with the most current firmware installed so there was no need to run that.

The programming software is easy to understand and to use, even for those that are not familiar with programming, it is very intuitive. The help screens are HTML based so its easy to navigate through all of the setup screens to find what you need.

Out of the box, its setup for a general FPS config but after just a few minutes, I was all setup and ready for Mass Effect 1, 2 3 as well as Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. I decided to print out all of my key maps for each of my games and assign them to the Nostromo in a layout that I felt was best for me. In reality, it took longer to print everything than it did to setup my Nostromo for each game.

Setting up macros is a bit more complicated than assigning a Key but well worth the time to learn. This will allow one to perform massive heals as well as complicated moves within a game that require several keystrokes and assign it to a single key. The macro screen has a recorder that will record your keystrokes and insert pauses where needed and also allow you to insert windows commands ( if needed ) into your macro. There is no limit on the length of each macro. I spent about 2 evenings reading a few web pages dedicated to creating macros with the Nostromo macro editor and creating my own, in general trying different things in the macro I was working with and now feel confident enough to do what I need to. This is a very powerful feature of the Nostromo and can really help in situations where time is critical.

The keys are sensitive and provide nice feedback.

There has been so much written about the thumb key that is mapped to the space-bar and I can only add my observations based on my use. When I am playing, I normally go for 15 - 18 hour play time and now have about 60 hours time on the Nostromo since I received it. I have found this key to be placed perfectly for my games and needs. in fact since its placement is just beneath the "D-Pad" which I remap to my WSAD cluster, it makes using or opening doors and picking up items much faster than when using my normal keyboard.. I haven't noticed any lag time or cumbersome operation from it at all. The key just above the D-Pad I remapped to bring up my in game main menu and remapped the "alt" key ( which is its default config) elsewhere when and as needed. So, in short, no issues here.

You can adjust the level of brightness of the lighting within the software and there is also a switch on the bottom of the Nostromo to turn off the light when not needed.

Switching between Key Sets is almost instant. I decided to map the wheel switch to cycle me through different Key Sets, then return to number one, although, any one of the keys or even the wheel can be mapped to do this or any combination or keys.

For me, the Nostromo is almost perfect, I play mainly when its dark and others are asleep so the key lighting is perfect and since the light not only illuminates the areas around the keys but also shines up through the keys and displays each keys nomenclature, although, after using it for awhile you will not be really looking at the keys :)

I play several different games as well as MMOs and the Nostromo fits my needs perfectly.

Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2012
The Nostromo has been best PC keypad series to date in my opinion; & this one is a true evolution of that line.

NOW maybe it's because I own a 360.. but I have NO PROBLEM with this d-pad like some other reviews mention... also as another more apt reviewer mentioned, that round center joy-stick cylinder slab slips right off (THANK YOU!!!) Opening up the whole d-pad, one which depresses easier than my 360 d-pad (I think you all know what I'm talking about.) The layout is phenomenal and the overall ergonomics are pretty well time-tested & researched. I would have liked it if the Palm-Rest had a slide-out clicker adjustment, but I just use 2 resting positions instead. (EDIT: I just now discovered this, but if you pull the Palmrest up it will reveal a second set of holes to adjust the throw distance for your fingers, this makes the space-bar less awkward for me and distances the keys into a more familar position)

Depending on the game you may want to swap the Space-Bar up to the little button over the D-pad.. or anywhere that's comfortable for you and the game you are trying to enjoy. The customization is spot on! I am currently using mine for Skyrim and I am a proud owner of a Naga as well.. and by all means this is the perfect accompaniment to that mouse. It's making the game WAY more fun to play. Granted I grew up with using w,a,s,d for moving so I don't use my Dpad like that, not that I couldn't throw down some Hadoukens with it, because I can, but I will agree that this dpad isn't great for agile manuevers. Rotation IS tricky without the round stub.. you'll tear your thumbs up if you go at it.. maybe if you sand the edges down. Either way, the position it is in and it's size make it obviously not for that purpose. A D-pad is not a 'serious flaw'.. this is a keypad, not a gamepad. I personally set my Dpad to do macros for quick-opening the U,D,L,R console-style submenu for items/skills/magic/map..

(MOD: Take the analog stick from an old controller, 360's fits PERFECTLY. The peg is even conveniently plus shaped like the hole on the Nostromo D-pad. SWEET! If you break that, get a plastic peg, like a piece off one of those floss-toothpicks, yank out the broken remains of the broken peg and pop that sucker on top of the Nostromo for a smoooooth Dpad! Sweet in Evochron with the strafe!)

Making macros then trying them out is a cinch, and it is very rewarding learning experience. You can set a default delay or tweak delays. It is a simple matter thanks to the macro managment console being so basic. You have to re-do the whole macro if you make a mistake, but it's fool-proofed.(BUT If you are sneaky, instead of redoing a macro entirely, to add more keystrokes, just insert a command like alt_tab, change the keys, and insert delays where needed & delete the extra strokes.) In response to some older posts; I would take it that this applies to all newer Razer gear, but the macros DO support 'multi-press' or 'spamming' which you set when you assign your macro to it's key/button.

Also, I see no real reason to complain of a lack of onboard memory for the macros when macros and profiles are all exportable individually.. On-board-memory is point-of-failure I can live without. Not sure why the guy using VM's was complaining. If you are loading VMs, the VM should already have the driver and profile... If not.. you should be networked, and that means you should be able to pull a pre-loaded VM or profile or macros from the network.. so unless you need the macros outside of Windows or OSX.. maybe if you're a hardcore shell tech...But that's not why I bought this, and probably not why you will either.. so you'll be just fine..

If you're a PC gamer or even if you immerse yourself any form of design or production on a computer the potential intuitivity you can adapt into this for your software and your workspace is limited to your time spent attuning your art & your layouts, your workspace & your loadouts.. very cool, this gadget is worth the investment!

This is my second Nostromo product. The first was the prototype they developed with Belkin. It was indispensable for many tasks and still works. This is the evolution of that device and with the additional rows of buttons and the slightly better placement it's an excellent tool. I've created profiles for data entry work, programming, gaming, and graphics. I bought one for a friend who uses a Wacom tablet and it entirely changed their workflow allowing them to dispose of the bulky keyboard entirely when working.

It's solid, puts up with some abuse, and has 8 keymaps per profile. I've never used them all on a single profile, which is great! Better too many options than not enough.

When gaming the keymap switch allows you to create custom programs for different weapons, specs, characters, or whatever you're playing with. In graphics I have one profile for Premier, one for Soundbooth, and one for Photoshop. The installed software will switch the profiles for you based on the active application. THIS IS AWESOME. Seldom does a great piece of hardware come with equally excellent software.

If you've never used any Nostromo keypads before, I suggest you try one. It will change your life.

I'm sad that the newer pads have removed the scroll wheel. I like it. I like to program it to different options (say scrolling through weapons in a game, or options in an app, or the x axis on a time-line (sound or video editing) etc...) A programmable wheel can be very useful, but I guess it wasn't popular enough to be kept in future models.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Cintiq Accessory
Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2013
I play a lot of games but I actually bought this to use with my Wacom Cintiq. Drawing/painting for more than an hour would start causing me back pain, having to lean across my desk to reach my computer for 2+ key hotkeys, or one-key hotkeys that were far away. The Nostromo solved that problem perfectly by letting me map very specific commands in a neat little cluster without messing with the mapping of my regular keyboard and playing how-far-can-i-stretch-my-fingers-with-a-stylus-in-my-hand.

My only problem with it was that with slow internet, I couldn't find a way to sign into Razer Synapse 2.0 to change some keys (though supposedly you can change the mapping/settings without using Synapse at all). It was such a minor problem compared to how much better my back feels and my workflow goes though, that it's not even worth taking off a star.

I use a wacom 12wx tablet, which only has 4 function keys on the left side (I don't use the right side ones at all). While they're in a more convenient place given my habit of holding onto the cintiq with my free hand while I draw, there are just not enough buttons and the scroll strip is buggy and unresponsive. If you had a tablet with more function keys such as the 21hd and bigger, or another brand, maybe the Nostromo's function here is already done for it. For me it's perfect though, I use every single button on it.

The keypad itself is very handsome, sturdy, and has a nice rubberized texture to it. The packaging was gorgeous as always.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well on a Mac
Reviewed in Canada on January 27, 2013
This product is aimed at game players on Windows machines. I'm not a gamer and I use mainly Macs, so I initially kept passing over this device as a possible choice. However it turns out that it works superbly well on a Mac, (with a little help), and it is amazingly useful for adding macros and customizing the many of keyboard shortcuts found in most high end programs.

The key to making it work on a Mac is a program called ControllerMate, which can take all the keys on the Nostromo and redirect them to do whatever you want. I've made up program-specific profiles that will automatically switch in when they detect "their" program is active, with a huge burst of productivity.

I left off one star on this review for the utterly stupid decision by Razer to block access to the 3 LEDs that normally show which of their built-in profiles is selected. These would be SO handy for showing me the same thing with my profiles, but Razer says NO. Unless you're on a PC and you use Razer software, which is totally outclassed by ControllerMate, then you can't use their LED's.

The quality of fit and finish is lightweight but good. It didn't fit my hand initially, but my hand adapted after a few hours of use. The key action is solid, with not exactly a click, but a slight "over-center" action that makes key presses unambiguous.

I'd recommend this device to anyone who would like to dramatically expand the user friendliness of their favorite programs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Standard keyboard is a better solution.
Reviewed in Canada on March 30, 2018
It's well made, but otherwise, the fact is that I would rather just play with a standard keyboard and mouse. The keys are also perfectly lined up unlike a normal keyboard. There's a reason why the keys on a standard keyboard are offset from rows to row. When I move up or down a row, my fingers naturally end up offset to one side or the other. The amount of keys available is rather limited. The end result is that there are very few games which I could play without being able to macro everything that I feel the need to have on hand. That says much, especially when considering that my mouse also provides many programmable buttons. It does not have the standard CTRL, Alt and Shift modifiers like normal keyboards do which only further compounds the problem.
