Rory laps it up! McIlroy sitting pretty with Caroline and can clinch money list top spot

Rory McIlroy has not had the easiest of weeks under a hot Singapore sun but he can deliver a memorable finish on Sunday by clinching the European Tour's money list.

A top-three finish at the Singapore Open would mean the 23-year-old had earned enough to make the last two events irrelevant.

It would cap an unforgettable year for him and ease the pain of a head cold that has left him feeling decidedly under the weather in temperatures in the mid-30s.

Dane Thomas Bjorn led here going into the fourth day but McIlroy, supported by his tennis star girlfriend, Caroline Wozniacki, was only five shots behind with 27 holes to play.

Even if McIlroy misses out on a top-three finish - and barring Louis Oosthuizen unexpectedly emerging from the middle of the pack to win - he is odds-on to emulate Luke Donald's feat of 12 months ago and be the top earner on both sides of the Atlantic.

McIlroy has had an incredible 2012 with four wins, including his second major at the US PGA Championship, as well as helping Europe to their extraordinary Ryder Cup comeback at Medinah.

Colin Montgomerie, who won the European money list a record eight times, said: 'What Rory has achieved this year has been absolutely fantastic.

'Last year when Luke won both money lists everyone thought how good was that? But now Rory's set to do it. And he's won the US PGA as well. He is a worthy world No 1 … and to think he is still only 23.'
