Limited Operations Begin At JFK, Newark Airports

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Air travelers stranded in the Northeast are a little closer to getting home after two of the biggest airports serving New York reopened.

Flights began to trickle in and out of John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International airports on Wednesday, but it could be days before operations are completely back to normal, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

The first passenger flight to JFK arrived from Long Beach, Calif., at 7:04 a.m. Wednesday. The JetBlue flight carried 150 passengers.

The first flight into Newark was a FedEx plane that landed at 7:12 a.m.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the two airports reopened on a very limited operational schedule and passengers are being urged to call their carriers before heading to the airports.

Traveler Pasqual Strich, who had been stuck at JFK since Monday morning, said American Airlines would get him on a flight to Germany by Wednesday night.

"I'll even sleep in the overhead compartments, I don't care, I just want to leave," he said.

LaGuardia Airport remains closed. Authorities are assessing the impact of the storm on the airport.
