Theodore Scott, a 60-year-old lawyer from Georgia, has been denied the prize from a contest held by Gold Peak Tea after the company discovered he was encouraging others to vote for him. After submitting an essay and accompanying video to Facebook explaining why he should win $100,000 and a year off work, he turned to About.com to encourage members of its contest forum to vote for him. Scott won the competition, but was disqualified by Gold Peak Tea after it cited the rules of the contest, saying that Scott had "inappropriately induce[d] members of the public to vote for his submission." Rallying internet denizens across social media and forums to boost votes is nothing new, but the decision in this case suggests that brands are starting to take notice and putting a stop to such actions.
