TV sports personality Gary Lineker has been left feeling a little red faced after he hit out at the X Factor on Twitter after believing that the final of the popular ITV1 talent show will fall on the same night as the Sports Personality Of The Year award ceremony.

Taking to the social networking site over the weekend, Gary, who will be hosting the show, which will pay particular attention to the Olympic and Paralympic games that took place this year, tweeted:

"Be a lovely gesture and mark of respect to our wonderful athletes if X Factor didn't run against SPOTY. What do you think @SimonCowell ?"

He then added: "It's not a question of who gets most viewers but those that love both shows, don't have to choose @SimonCowell #specialyear."

Responding to Gary's tweet, ITV told the Mirror that a clash between the shows wasn't going to happen.

"There will be no clash and there was never a danger of that", they said.

It is believed that the date of the final of the X Factor, which has been moved to Manchester, will take place on the weekend of the 8th/9th of December, a few weeks from the sports award show which will take place at the Excel Arena on December 16.

With his tweets making news in the Daily Star, Gary took to Twitter to play down the reports branding their story "inaccurate".

He wrote: "Yet another inaccurate story. There has been no row."
