The X Factor USA has had to switch around the mentor categories to ensure Britney Spears will have the strongest contenders.

After it was reported that the popstar was hired for a huge $15 million, the show's bosses wanted to ensure they could justify their big spend by giving her the best shot of having a contestant in the Top 3.

Despite the talent show's ratings dropping dramatically since the singer joined the judging panel, bosses think it would be far worse if she got stuck mentoring a weak group.

Having eliminated the Boys and Girls categories, Britney has swapped groups with fellow judge, Demi Lovato, and will now be in charge of the 12 to 16 year olds instead of ages 17 to 24. And this isn't the first time the pair have had to do a switch.

Britney was initially meant to sit next to Simon Cowell but when it became clear he had better chemistry with Demi, Britney was moved next to L.A. Reid.

All other decisions have remained the same - so L.A. still has ages 25 and over, with guest judge Justin Bieber, while Simon will mentor the groups, with assistance from Marc Anthony at the 'judge's houses' phase.

Popular artist Will.I.Am, will join Britney in Malibu to decide which youngsters make it through to the live shows and Demi has help from good friend Nick Jonas.
