WATCH: X Factor's Melanie Masson 'I Might Have Been A Singer But I've Never Had My Big Break'

X Factor hopeful Melanie Masson wowed audiences with her powerful performance of Janis Joplin's 'Cry Baby' on Saturday night but with rumours about her past in the music business forcing some to claim she is not just a talented wannabe, we sat down with the 44-year-old to get some facts straight.

Since her performance aired on Saturday the singer has faced attacks over her past musical success. Her audition wasn't the first time the full-time mum had hit the stage, she has actually had a long career as a singer something that hasn't gone down too well with fans, who claim she has misled viewers.

When we spoke to the lovely Melanie she admitted that while in the past she had been signed to EMI at age 26 and worked as a session and singer, she had never really been given that chance of a big break, until she auditioned for X Factor.

Speaking to the face of Entertainmentwise, Georgie Barrat, Melaine said: 'I've been working, trying to get a break, I suppose since I was 14."

She went on: “I was signed to EMI at the age of 26, then I got dropped and got back on that horse and knocked on doors.”

In the past Melanie has worked with the likes of the Stereophonics, Kasabain, Fatboy Slim and the Happy Mondays.

But despite her success in the music industry, mother of two claims she is yet to “have that big break” that she hopes X Factor can give her and for the past few years Melanie has been playing the role of devoted mum rather than rock star.
