    The XX had a stunning debut album released when they were still in their teens which saw them emerge with a unique sound fully formed apparently out of nowhere. That album was critically acclaimed , won the Mecury Music Prize, and was a commercial success subsequently selling over a million. The new follow up is in the same mould, but it is better produced, and vocals are now more to the fore. The characteristic sound is subtle beats and synthesisers, woven though with a slinky bass, and shimmery spiderlike guitar. The arrangements are gentle and enchanting, subtley growing on you. The mood is generally downbeat, lyrics highlight fears of relationships falling apart. Romy Madley Croft's vocals remind me at times of Tracy Thorn's vocal style , they are clear, chilled, gorgeously executed, spine tingling, right from the stunning opener Angels. Second track Chained has a lovely duet with Oliver Sim, while track 3 ,Fiction has just Oliver singing. In general my favourite tracks are the slightly off kilter duets featuring both Romy and Oliver beautifully complementing each other. The third band member Jamie Smith is a production whizz kid, in demand by others, who is responsible for their blissed out subtle music, leaving plenty of space in the arrangements. Try is another duet track, while Reunion stands out as being a bit different with subtle organic steel pans taking the place of the usual synthesiser. Most of the tracks are only just over 3 minutes, and the album glides by, creating a lovely ambience . I am sure this will be another big hit and a strong contender for album of the year . Such brilliance from a trio of 23 year olds , who go on from strength to strength, great stuff.

    as a massive xx fan from the off i must say when i first heard their new songs live i couldnt wait to get
    this cd. however on first listen i was abit suprised, its very subtle, echoey and stripped back compared to the first
    album or their live shows which seemed to be more upbeat. there are some great songs and after repeated listens of the whole album start to finish i think overall this is another triumph. it wont get as much air play or recognition as the debut and unfortunately probably wont win them many more fans either. but they stayed true to themselves when they couldve gone main stream and in a totally different direction. hats off to you guys.

    I understand some of the criticisms of "Coexist". It is, in some senses, more of the same, but maybe we're forgetting how original and individual the first record was! "Coexist" is much more pared down: every note , every beat, every space, every word is very deliberate and carefully chosen. Despite this, it is not an immediately accessible record. It took me 4 or 5 plays to start to really appreciate it, and now I find it more magical every time, the songs all starting to stand out . I thoroughly recommend it, but persevere!

    En 2009, la planète rock voyait débarquer dans ses bacs un ovni, singulièrement orné d'un « x » blanc sur fond noir. Mystérieux et interpellant, ce debut album éponyme allait connaître une ribambelle d'apologies toutes plus dithyrambiques les unes que les autres. Du jour au lendemain, ou presque, les quatre jeunes Londoniens dissimulés sous cette lettre, symbole usuel des l'anonymat, en sortaient précisément, et se retrouvaient catapultés sous les projecteurs d'un public exigeant et international. L'un après l'autre, les critiques qualifiés se sont emparées du phénomène, personne ne voulant être le dernier à les applaudir. Beaucoup, aussi, ont sauté sur l'effet de mode, comme ils sautent sur du Solveig en boîte de nuit. Quoi qu'il en soit, on a connu des débuts bien plus fastidieux que ceux-là. Mais qu'on aime ou qu'on n'aime pas, reconnaissons à The xx le mérite de créer une musique qui, bien plus que d'avoir le simple mérite d'exister, existe réellement.

    Leur talent, c'est celui d'insuffler tout en douceur un univers propre et étendu, formé d'une large palette de couleurs sombres. Leur griffe, c'est un rock percutant de calme, aux silences pointilleusement cadencés, qui alterne le chaud et le froid et vient parfois effleurer l'érotisme platonique. Un minimalisme nocturne et enrobant, inspiré par leur apprentissage musical ; c'est la nuit venue qu'ils jouaient ensemble, diminuant le son de leurs amplis au minimum pour ne pas réveiller frères, saeurs ou parents. De cette passion commune est né un succès qui ne doit rien à personne d'autre.

    Après ce premier album réussi, et une tournée qui les a menés partout dans le monde, quelle pression sur les épaules de ces jeunes artistes, à l'heure où sort leur second album...

    Sur Coexist, la recette miracle ne change pas. On remarque toutefois que certains passages privilégient l'électronique. Des titres comme « Reunion » ou « Sunset » s'assimilent, en quelque sorte, à une évolution épurée du Everything but the Girl remixé par Todd Terry dans les années 90. Une notion de synthétisme avant tout accentuée par les percussions, qui ricochent parfois comme des beats de dance. On n'atteint pas encore le post-dubstep de James Blake, basse et guitare permettant de ne pas sortir du format pop conventionnel, mais certains morceaux de l'album pourraient presque nous faire danser. Sur Coexist, la guitare est mesurée, au millimètre. On la sent en pleine retenue, plus souvent qu'à son tour, distillant ses litanies avec encore plus de justesse.

    The xx, c'est aussi deux voix aussi différentes que complémentaires. Si la qualité du chant de Romy Croft nous avait déjà sauté aux oreilles, force est de constater que Jamie Smith a bien bossé le sien. Moins sèche, sa voix se dessine avec davantage de forme et de maturité. De loin, on croirait parfois entendre du Murat. Il ne se contente plus de réciter ses textes de façon diatonique, et peut à présent assumer l'un ou l'autre titre seul au micro.

    A l'instar de la musique de Radiohead, celle de The xx se comprend et s'apprécie tant et plus, au fur et à mesure des écoutes successives - rares d'ailleurs sont les groupes capables d'une telle maestria. Ainsi, même dépourvu de vraie surprise, court de 33 petites minutes à peine et camouflé au sein d'une harmonique d'apparence simpliste, Coexist n'en est pas moins chiche, dans son entièreté, de provoquer l'addiction.

    War’s die Angst, war’s die Aufregung? Man kann sich jedenfalls getrost den Schweiß von der Stirn wischen, sich zurücklehnen und endlich, endlich wieder durchatmen. Ähnlich wird es den dreien gehen, jetzt, da sie den Nachfolger zum genialen Debüt draußen haben, jetzt, da die Arbeit gemacht und der Kampf gekämpft ist, da sich die ins Übermächtige gesteigerten Erwartungen nunmehr am fertigen Produkt messen können, Antworten erwartet werden auf die Fragen: Bleibt es spannend? Bleibt es gut? Wird es vielleicht sogar besser?

    Bevor hier ein lautes, ein dreifaches ‘Ja!’ geschmettert werden soll, darf kurz noch darüber räsoniert werden, wann sich eigentlich eine Plattenfirma dafür entscheidet, vor dem Veröffentlichungstermin mit dem kostenlosen Stream ins Netz zu gehen. Dann, wenn man mehr Personal als die normale Promo dazu einsetzen muss, um die Leaks, die Löcher zu stopfen (dass ein Netz naturgemäß nur aus Löchern besteht, kann da wohl kaum beruhigen)? Dann, wenn man befürchten muß, die Anzahl der illegalen Downloads könnte die der legalen Einkäufe übertreffen? Das Tamtam jedenfalls, was um die zweite Platte der recht bald zum Trio geschrumpften Londoner Band veranstaltet wurde, war fraglos aberwitzig, gemessen am Echo ihres Erstlings aber vielleicht auch verständlich – Top Of All Lists, Mercury Prize, die Branche braucht dringend Hoffnungsträger und The XX werden sie, das lässt sich jetzt sagen, nicht enttäuschen.

    Dabei sind die Veränderungen, die sie ihrem Sound verpaßt haben, gar nicht so riesig, wie von vielen behauptet – gottlob bleibt die geheimnisvolle, sinistre Grundstimmung der Stücke unangetastet, der intime Wechselgesang zwischen Romy Madley Croft und Oliver Sim ebenso, einzig Jamie Smith darf das gewohnte Gefüge aufbrechen und gibt den neuen Stücken in kluger Dosierung zur Beschleunigung die passenden Beats hinzu – das ist es. Und das reicht, um den Gesamteindruck auf höchstem Niveau zu halten. Der blecherne Trommelwirbel zur dumpfen Bassdrum (“Angels”) nur ein Anfang, das Ticken über dunklem Grollen bei “Chained”, dazu die jubilierenden Gitarren, spätestens bei “Fiction” hat man alle Vorbehalte und jedwedes Misstrauen beiseite gelegt und sich dem Zauber ergeben.

    Wie schon beim Vorgänger greift auch bei “Coexist” maßgenau ein Track in den nächsten, auf das taumelnde, behutsam geloopte “Try” folgen die straffen Hooks von “Reunion” und der feine Beat bei “Sunset”, immer wieder von Pausen unterbrochen, von schillernden Chords ergänzt. “Missing” ist ein ganz großer Wurf, den so zu früheren Zeiten vielleicht nur Adrian Thaws aka. Tricky hinbekommen hätte, dieses schleppende Wummern, begleitet von Sims abgrundtiefem Timbre: “My heart is beating in a diffrenet way, been gone such a long way“ – phänomenal, word.

    Ebenso groß und einzigartig: „Unfold“ – die Nackenhaare aufgestellt, lauscht man mit Schaudern „Oh, let it unfold, I won't leave it untold, the feeling goes on and on and on…”. “Swept Away” danach ist vielleicht das Stück, was die Hinwendung der drei zu – ansatzweise – tanzbarem Sound am konsequentesten verkörpert, bevor dann “Our Song” den akkustischen Abschied markiert: “Like you do, what I've done you've done too, the walls I hide behind, you walk through…”. Keine Ahnung, welches der vielen Etiketten, die nun das lichte Cover des Albums zieren werden – ob “Klangkunst” oder “Geniestreich” – das treffendste ist, fest steht: Es gibt keinen Grund, mit Lob zu geizen, gerade weil die Fallhöhe für The XX eine beträchtliche war. Ebenso sicher: Es wird in diesem Jahr, zumindest aus dieser Ecke, nicht viel Besseres kommen. mapambulo:blog

    Je pense qu il faut vraiment que vous nettoyiez les oreilles ceux qui n ont pas compris cet album ! Cet album est calme et alors ? Faut il qu un album soit de style rock ou hard rock pour qu il soit bon ? Je pense que les vrais mélomanes ne peuvent pas éluder le fait que cet album est un bijou du début à la fin. Le mariage des voix pour n évoquer que ça est à tomber par terre ... L'ambiance nocturne et mélancolique incroyable. A mes yeux au dessus du premier album qui était déjà très intéressant. Une cohésion musicale rare de nos jours, un travail d orfèvre et de vrais artistes ... rihanna, lady gaga et autres ne se reconnaitront pas, désolé pour elles mais là nous parlons de musique et d art ! Je pense qu à un âge si précoce finalement très peu de musiciens aujourd hui sont capables d une maturité et qualité sonores de cette trempe là. Comme on dit la critique est facile mais l art est difficile, pas pour the XX apparemment ... continuez les jeunes vous êtes vraiment très doués. Merci à vous en tout cas pour cet envoûtant album.
