X Factor winners Little Mix top UK singles chart

Little Mix, the winners of last year's X Factor, have gone straight to the top of the UK chart with their single Wings.

It is the second number one for the four-piece girl band, who also had a number one with their debut release, Cannonball.

In the album chart British pop sensation Rita Ora landed a debut number one with the self titled, Ora.

Her single How We Do (Party) was also at number three in the singles chart.

Mid-week figures from the Official UK Charts Company showed Little Mix outsold last week's top hit, Sam And The Womp's Bom Bom by more than two copies to one.

It dropped to second place on Sunday.

Little Mix auditioned as solo singers for last year's X Factor but were put together as a band during the series by judge Tulisa Contostavlos.

Band member Jesy Nelson said they have had "the best week ever".

"We feel like Wings is our baby that we've been waiting to unleash on the world. To have it released and go straight to number one is just incredible," she said.

There was just one other new entry in the top 40 singles chart.

Killer, the debut single from N-Dubz member, Fazer entered the chart at number 17.

Meanwhile, last week's number 17, Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's Good Time, climbed to number four.

In the album chart Emile Sande dropped to second place. Our Version of Events has now spent 29 weeks in the chart.

New entry My Head is an Animal by Of Monsters and Men claimed the number three spot, with Elbow reaching number four with Fall To Grace.

It was the second top 40 placing for the five-piece from Manchester who saw their 2008 album, Seldom Seen Kid, at number 15.

Elsewhere, Havoc and Bright Lights by Canadian singer songwriter, Alanis Morissette debuted at number 12.

The Olympics and Paralympics have continued to have an effect on both the album and singles chart with many songs by artists who performed during the opening and closing ceremonies achieving renewed success.

American rap group Public Enemy's 2007 hit, Harder Than You Think, the soundtrack to Channel Four's coverage of the Paralympics, is this week's number four in the singles chart.

One Direction and Ed Sheeran, who performed during the Olympics closing ceremony both have albums in the top 40.
