Doctor Who and The X Factor dominated the ratings last night for their respective channels, but both are steadily losing viewers year-on-year.

For Doctor Who, the slip on 2011's premiere is a very marginal one. The show garnered 6.38 million viewers (a 29.3% audience share) overall; down on the 6.52 million (36.7%) from last April.

The X Factor, meanwhile, slipped a massive 2.5 million year-on-year, appealing to 8.15 million (35%), adding 422,000 on ITV1+1 to total 8.57 million overall. The third episode last year had 10.51 million (43.4%), and just last week the show fell marginally short of 9 million.

It's better news for Caroline Flack spin-off The Xtra Factor, however.

As Jade Richards made her long-awaited return, the ITV2 show pulled in 943,000 viewers - up on the 740,000 from the same time last year.

Meanwhile, the Paralympics scored 2.56 million on Channel 4 while Celebrity Big Brother continued with 1.4 million over on Channel 5.
