They're still a long way off recent years, but last night's X Factor ratings demonstrated an encouraging U-turn on the previous week's limp opener.

Despite remaining the most-watched broadcast of the day, last Saturday's season premiere commanded a relatively low audience of 8.1 million viewers.

Last night an extra 300,000 joined the fun, with numbers from ITV1+1 lifting the consolidated total to 8.9 million overall.

Telly Mix reports that the show peaked at a massive 11 million as the likes of Lucy Spraggan stepped up to the plate.

Despite dropping dramatically during the live shows, last year's audition episodes were a smash hit with viewers.

The arrivals of Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland, combined with the tryouts of the likes of Jade Richards, Amelia Lily and Janet Devlin, kept fans addicted.

Last week ITV bosses said they were not concerned by this year's numbers.
