Product description
Remastered version of Jesus Christ Superstar, the seminal, genre-defining rock album written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The album was the starting point of the Jesus Christ Superstar phenomenon and spawned the now world famous theatrical stage show and Hollywood film.
Featuring a long list of legendary musicians, the album has renowned rock vocalist and Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan voicing the part of Jesus, platinum selling solo artist Murray Head as Judas Iscariot and the inimitable Yvonne Elliman in the role of Mary Magdalene. Originally released in 1970, the album achieved huge global fame, most notably in the United States where it went to Number 1 on the Billboard Album Chart, keeping other seminal records by George Harrison and Led Zeppelin off the top spot and going on to sell over 7 million copies worldwide.
The release comes in the wake of the recording’s 40th anniversary, and with an ITV and Andrew Lloyd Webber show to search for a performer to play Jesus in a UK arena tour.
Jesus Christ Superstar portrays the story of the last seven days of Christ’s life leading up to his crucifixion, with hit songs such as "Superstar", "I Don’t Know How To Love Him", "Heaven On Their Minds" and "Hosanna". Recorded in 1969, the album has since become recognised by many as one of the first rock concept albums. As well as having some of the era’s most prominent vocalists, the record also features a number of legendary rock music session musicians such as Neil Hubbard (Bryan Ferry, BB King, Elton John), Chris Spedding (Roxy Music, John Cale), Alan Spenner (Joe Cocker, Peter Frampton) and Bruce Rowland (Paul McCartney’s Wings, Fairport Convention).

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2012I went to see this show when I was a kid with my family and we all loved it. Even my dad was moved to tears (and he was an athiest) but my Mum and I (especially) loved it. A few years later, I found the original LP recording of this in my local record library and took it out. I renewed it every fortnight for the next two years as that's how long it took me to save up and get my hands on my own copy. I just couldn't bear to part with it. I knew every word and note of this recording as that's how many times I played it. Much later, like another reviewer here, I paid an arm and a leg for a CD copy imported from the US.
I am so glad there is to be an arena tour of this show and that this was the recorded version released to accompany the TV show. Unlike many other versions and recordings, this one shows the music in it's true light. It's a real rock opera as it consists of performmances by true rock artists. Ian Gillan is fabulous as Jesus and the supporting cast are all excellent but the performance of Murray Head as Judas steals the show for me. 'Heaven on their minds' is a masterpiece and 'Judas' Death' is so raw and painful that no-one can fail to be moved. I for one will be buying it to see if the remastered version is an improvement on the excellent 1970 cd already in my possession. WATCH THIS SPACE!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2016One of the very best ALW recordings. The quality is what impresses me as well as the wonderful music. ALW was fussy about how his music would be reproduced in spite of the protests from, one heard, Broadway eg, that he would insist on being control of production. One could understand their protests as they were used to being seen as the greatest of musical producers, but ALW is an exception to the rule and he was right to insist on control or not to let them have his work.
I was most impressed by Murray Head's representation of Judas and the catch 22 situation that Judas is forced into. Someone has to betray Christ or Christ will not be arrested, condemned and crucified, and Judas was the chosen betrayer. This terrible catch 22 is explored by Tim Rice's wonderful and moving lyrics. The story of the Sacrificial King is always compelling drama, but this time it's not just Christ that has to fulfil the path that God has mapped for him, driving him to despair at times as he realises his life is forfeit no matter what he feels, but also the damnation of Judas for all time, as Judas sings in his most poignant song. Doing the Will of God is not an easy thing. Sacrifices are require
I think this is one of the most compelling and amazing musicals ever, based around a timeless story that never fails to arouse discussion. One of my most favourite pieces of composition and one of my most favourite CDs
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2012I think JesusChrist Superstar is my very favourite musical of all time ( along with Les Miserables!) and I already have the cd's from both of the films made of it. So I wasn't too bothered about getting the latest remastered cd of the early 70's show. To be honest, I thought it would sound dated. Then I read through all of the reviews on this page and everyone saying how it is the best version etc. So I bought it and I am really pleased that I did :) I agree with you all, it is THE BEST and the singers are just awesome. I can't stop playing it! It has the raw, gritty edge to it that I love to hear in rock operas, and it doesn't in the least sound dated. In fact, I think it beats all the other more recent versions easily, and I now realise that they have 'sanitised' it too much - messed it around and lost the raw, pure rock sound of it. I think that Andrew Lloyd Webber should go back to the original version of it and have it performed in this way! A wonderful cd and best played at full volume :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2024Can’t see how this is blasphemous, or was. Could do without sone of the rock screeching, but these singers are marvelous. Very taxing. Though Andrew Lloyd Webber did nick one or two songs like I Don’t Know How To Love Him the opening is almost identical to a Mendlesson tune and even Adam Ed For All Time is very like the Batman beat etc. But nevertheless a great album and film.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 July 2012Having seen and heard most of the versions of this tremendous musical, this is by a long shot, the very best. I bought this album originally having heard it at a friends and have been mesmerised by it every since. I have the London cast version and have seen the movie, but they are not a patch on the sensitive, heartfelt, emotion packed interpretation of this amazing cast of disparate musicians and singers. It is the music that really matters and because these performers were unhampered by how they looked or danced or acted, they can put their whole heart and soul into their performance. As this musical is so incredible, it will be fantastic whoever performs it, provided they are professionals, but if you want to appreciate the full depth and meaning of the music and words, this has to be the one you keep and treasure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 February 2022Bought the original vinyl in Germany in the early 1970's and instantly fell in love with Gillan's voicing of Jesus. So many great performances on this. Not a huge musical theatre, or a fan of religious stuff for that matter, but this transcends those. Saw another touring production mid seventies too. Fun.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2017Saw the original of this show in London 45 years ago and have got the vinyl edition, am going to see it again in Regents Park open theatre, hope the weather stays dry, lol.
Have played it several times, to get in the mood as don't have a deck to play the vinyl on, it's just as I remembered it, great.

5.0 out of 5 stars "unsterblich" - auch wenn alt

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing performances that have stood the test of decades.
I had not heard this music in many years, but I’ve remembered this album with love for the 40 odd years since I first heard it in my teens. I recently bought an album that said “original Broadway cast“ and in the Broadway album many of the performers were indeed the same singers as on this album. However, the performances on this, the original concept album recordings, are far superior to that of the Broadway recording ( white and gold cover). Get the one with the brown cover that says “OCR”.
This album had a rawness and immediacy of emotion that truly stopped my mind all those years ago. The Broadway recording by comparison, sounded stale and canned, as if the performers had sung the songs way too many times over the years. There were several numbers that were not included in the Broadway album at all. I’m not just sniveling out of nostalgia for the original concept album. I am saying that the performances in this version are so much better there is just no contest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buona qualità della registrazione originale rimasterizzata.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maravillosa
Es uno de los más grandes musicales que se han escrito y para mi gusto, esta versión es la mejor que se ha grabado.
