Melanie C has claimed that contestants on Andrew Lloyd-Webber's new show Superstar have a better chance of winning a sustained career than those who pass through The X Factor.

The former Spice Girl, who is a judge on the show and will star in the final production, was asked to compare the two ITV talent shows by The Sun's TV magazine.

"Jesus has to have an incredible voice, great acting ability and a lot of charisma," she said. "I'm glad it's the British public's job to cast him, not mine.

"What set's Andrew's show apart from other casting shows like The X Factor is that there's a career at the end of it. In the music industry there's a lot more luck involved, you can be hot one minute and dropped the next."

The one-time Sporty Spice credited Jason Donovan with her own role in the production.

"I came into the TV show as a mentor and now I've ended up part of the production. Jason encouraged me to talk to Andrew about playing Mary but I didn't have to sing for her - he trusted me that I can do it.

"I've got a lot to prove in rehearsals."

Superstar continues tonight on ITV1.
