Surfacing from a sea of musical mediocrity that currently afflicts the current music scene is this little gem. Pnau have proven that its is possible to re invent music in such a way that you have to admire their boldness in trawling through Elton Johns back log meshing together different song parts and imprint their personal stamp on them.

Lets makes things clear here this a Pnau album through and through and should be reviewed as such. Elton John's material is a contributing factor but the duo's inventive approach and execution lifts the music to another level and makes it their album.

A number of reviews comment on the albums brevity. Personally I feel the short track duration adds to the appeal leaving you wanting more, so you play the track again and again. This one of the albums strengths and suits the nature of the songs. Any longer and the tracks appeal diminishes.

As a non EJ fan most of the songs Pnau have chosen are unfamiliar to me so my opinion is not influenced .

High points abound. My personal favourites are Foreign fields( incredibly good), Sad, Good Morning to the night and Phoenix , but the rest is still enjoyable.

I can recall Pete Drummond once reviewing Spirit's debut album back in 1968. He said it left him in a cold sweat because it was so good.

    So is this.

This album is uniformly charming - warm, friendly, melodic and with spacious production. It brings to mind the warm summers of the 70s, radio 2 playing in the background and time stretching out into the distance.

If that feels bittersweet in 2012, several of the tracks here push the melancholy electronica for all it's worth. The single 'Sad', in particular, is stunning - an instant classic. 'Foreign Fields' has the same vibe (and reminds me of a basslined, synthesized 'Drive' by The Cars) with haunting backing vocals and beautiful lyrics. Elsewhere (eg 'Good Morning To The Night', 'Karmatron', 'Phoenix') things get a little more upbeat but with some prog-rock touches.

If I didn't know beforehand that each song is a cut-and-shut of several Elton tracks I would never have guessed it. Pnau have achieved something so worthwhile with this album; far more than a remix project, this really is a work of art.

When i heard the advert for this album, and heard the song 'Sad' in the advert, I instantly searched on YouTube for it. I loved it. I like the way they have brought these songs into a 80s disco groove. I prefer old music to new music cause old music has more soul and meaning. But this is just great.

However when you get on to 'Good Morning To The Night' it gets even more 80s disco. Now i like 80s music (personally its my fav music year) so i understand that some people won't like this album. But, especially 'Sad' is just one of those songs that, on a nice sunny day, you play it out loud with a bunch of your friends and the world would look right for once.

To conclude, this album is a good buy. However if your not that into 80's Disco then perhaps avoid. But if you are a Elton John fan then get this album cause they have done a great job on it.

I was skeptical at first when I heard "sad" weeks ago. Oh, another remix I though, but slowly the piece and the sound grew on me.
Now I know. It's such a brilliant concept to marry Elton's old and sleeping gems with the sound and technology of PNAU in 2012.

WOW, what an exciting revival. Even if it's "only" 8 tracks there's SO much awesomess and musical history hidden in each one! The production is really nice and it feels like traveling in time when you listen through the different tracks. Obviously the album become more important for the early Elton fans (revival of early life experiences in a surreal way?), but for new listeners I believe the excellent production of the tracks will make it easy for the ears regardless of musical background.

Eventually we need another album!!! Elton's back catalogue is massive!

I'm still waiting for my hard copy to come in the post so have been listening to this on my Sonos system all day today. I have to say I wasn't expecting it to be this good, really. It is a brilliant album and the sound is awesome. I agree with the other reviewer that the tracks could have been longer. Sixty just gets going and then it's over. It's a bit like getting into a Porsche, putting in the keys, starting it up then running out of petrol as you pull away... But I do still love it. When it's this good we want it to last. Well done Pnau and thanks Elton for allowing it to happen. I take it this is why we're waiting for The Diving Board!!! Ok. I'll wait, this was worth it.

Telegraph To The Afterlife is by quite some distance the standout track for me on this unexpected little gem of an album. There does seem to be some space filling intros as on Sixty that ends a tad abruptly.Good Morning To The Night sets the scene with familiar remixes that will have your feet tapping along.Sad is anything but and continues in a similar vein.Black Icy Star does Caribou justice , and Foreign Fields is a flyer from start to finish. In all a terrific album at a terrific price,be warned it can lead on to further desire for more Elton John music.Well done Amazon...

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Reviewed in the United States on 8 September 2012
If, like me, you grew up listening to Elton John, this cd will evoke much nostalgia. The songs come primarily from the "classic" Elton period; 1970-76 with one or two exceptions. With waves of different songs blending a tapestry, each track is a journey that you just don't want to end. Background vocals are turned into leads, chorus sections are turned into verse and vice versa.

On first listen, I loved some, but not all, of what I heard. After being so used to the original version of a couple tracks, I couldn't wrap my mind around what was happening in the twisted version on this cd, specifically the track using High Flying Bird - one of my Elton favorites. But after a few listens, I have come around & like it more each time.

The only criticism I have of this cd is that I am left wanting more (they say that is usually a good thing). It is over so quickly with only 8 tracks. I can only hope that there will be a Volume 2 (and more!).

I find it interesting (and quite telling) how this cd rocketed to the number one position in England with barely a whisper in the US. Music tastes have changed so drastically in the last 25 years. Substance doesn't seem to carry the same weight it once did.

Hats off to Pnau for recognizing the genius behind this music and giving it a 21st century touch. And to Elton John for getting behind the project and recently performing some of the tracks live with Pnau at Ibiza.
