I've been a fan of Linkin Park since their first album, Hybrid Theory, and have watched them grow as a band over the years and gradually shift their sound into something new. Living Things is interesting as, for me, it combines what is great about every album they have presented to date.
First off, I'm one of those rare people who LOVED A Thousand Suns. It's great to hear a band experiment with their sound instead of stay with the same thing for years on end, and Living Things really carries on this 'evolution', so to speak, as we still hear strong hints of electronic in the music that could almost be an echo of what came before. On the other hand, it also hearkens back to what they were doing over a decade ago with Hybrid Theory and Meteora as they strengthen the rap metal/nu metal aspect of their sound.
On a first listen to the album, I felt impressed by the first few songs ('Lost In The Echo', 'In My Remains', and 'Burn It Down') as they felt catchy, flowing and an excellent entrance to the rest of the album. The instrumentals are fabulous, Chester's voice is spot on in every department, as is Shinoda's rapping, and there is a sense of atmosphere as they seemingly explore the fragility of the human psyche. 'Lies Greed Misery' seems to be the retaliation to this, and is probably the heaviest song on the album along with 'Victimized', as Linkin Park go back to their rap metal roots that gives these two songs in particular a snarling, nasty edge to them. After the excellent and inspiring 'I'Ll Be Gone' and 'Castle Of Glass', however, I began to lose a bit of interest. 'Roads Untraveled' sounds lovely but never seems to get up and go like the earlier songs, reminding me in many ways of 'Iridescent' from A Thousand Suns (although Iridescent is by far superior to Roads Untraveled as it flows nicer with better lyrics). 'Skin To Bone' is better but not great. 'Until It Breaks' and 'Tinfoil' WERE going to be listed as my least favourite on the album, but then I realised that very much like A Thousand Suns' 'Fallout', these songs were only setting the stage for the end with 'Powerless', which is very much like a rock ballad. Overall it is a pleasant ballad to listen to, but unlike 'Pushing Me Away', 'Numb' and 'The Messenger', does not show the true raw power of Chester's vocals to end the album on a high.
That was just my first listen.
My second listen this afternoon has improved my opinion considerably, and I have realised that Living Things is one of those albums that needs multiple listens for you to truly fall in love with it. Fine, it still has those odd songs that stand out from the others, but I found that this was much the same with Minutes to Midnight and to a certain extent A Thousand Suns. I can now listen to most of Linkin Park's albums all the way through with absolute delight. There's no song I want to skip (perhaps with the exception of some on Minutes to Midnight) because I've found that most of their albums tell a continuous story throughout. Living Things, as I have mentioned earlier, seems to explore the fragility of, quite literally, living things, particularly humans with our delicate state of minds and fragile bodies. But this is all just my opinion. It's certainly an album well worth getting if you're a fan of Linkin Park and even if you're new to their music. Listen to the lyrics and enjoy the story it tells.
I know many people don't like the album, but I also highly recommend A Thousand Suns as well. Not everybody will like the heavier rap metal sound that they produced in their earlier music, so their later stuff (Minutes to Midnight and onwards really) might appeal to most.
From me, 4/5 stars as a VERY early judgement. In months to come, when the songs are stuck in my head and how they are structured seems more familiar, it will probably be 5/5.
EDIT: I have upped the rating to five stars now, as I just can't stop listening to this fabulous album that is undoubtedly Linkin Park's best work to date. I've permanently got my MP3 player plugged into my ears just so I can listen to it. Fantastic album. Should be listed as one of the best for the 21st century.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2012A few years has passed since A Thousand Suns and many wondered how they would follow such a remarkable album...Well, they have.
Living Things is a mix of all of their previous work and I believe this is the sound they've been wanting to make for years. After listening to it numerous times from front to back I have to say that it's their best work to date! If you're one of those people who are stuck in the early 2000's Linkin Park and don't want to grow up then you'll most likely hate this CD. But if you've loved every single album and have been able to appreciate the change musically in Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns then you'll defiantly love this CD.
Lost In The Echo 10/10
A great opening track and makes you want to see what happens next in LIVING THINGS.
In My Remains 10/10
Another great song and you can tell it'll be a future single.
Burn It Down 8/10
Good song but I don't think it was strong enough to be a first single.
Lies Greed Misery 10/10
One of my favorites on the album. It's good to see Chester screaming at the end.
I'll Be Gone 8/10
Another potential single, good to hear Brads guitar again.
Castle Of Glass 20/10
My favorite song on the album. It's something Linkin Park hasn't done before but it's just brilliant.
Victimized 8/10
The heaviest song on the album and damn! It's a good one. Only downside it's not long enough.
Roads Untraveled 10/10
Another standout track in LIVING THINGS. I can see this being a hit at live concerts.
Skin To Bone 8/10
A pretty good song, not the best on LIVING THINGS but it's still a good song.
Until It Breaks 15/10
A Mike Shinoda song and it doesn't disappoint. Very catchy and he has great raps in this song. Has a retro feel to it.
Tinfoil 10/10
A minute instrumental that leads into the finale of LIVING THINGS.
Powerless 18/10
The ending song to LIVING THINGS is a Chester song and wow....It's just breathtaking like The Messenger was in A Thousand Suns. The chorus is one of the best piece of writing I've heard in a long time ''And you held it all but you were careless to let it fall. You held it all and I was by your side, powerless.''
In closing LIVING THINGS has set the bar again for Linkin Park and it makes you eager for what they'll bring next.
LIVING THINGS 5/5
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2024As described, well packaged and quick delivery
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2012...I say surprisingly, because I thought their previous album was utter, utter sh- (you get the idea); when I say I hated it, I really did. It's the last time I buy an album on a whim without listening to a preview first.
You may not be surprised to hear, therefore, that I wasn't really expecting too much from this follow up; Burn It Down was revealed as the first single. My initial response was more of a "meh" than a "that's more like it" and so it's fair to say I wasn't exactly at the front of the pre-order queue, or even the second-week sales queue. Even the previews didn't sway me and so I forgot about it.
However, Amazon then offered it for a fiver soon after it's release and so I took a chance - and I'm now glad I did. Contrary to my initial impressions, there are some really solid songs on here; Lost In The Echo, Skin To Bone and the rather brilliant Castle Of Glass to name a few. Yeah, there are a couple of dodgy numbers, but at least it's a return to form for the ex-metal band.
So if, like me, you hated A Thousand Suns, then give them a second chance with this album. For a start it's got actual songs on it instead of experimental, self-indulgent bilge of it's predecessor. Thus Linkin Park are back on my regular playlist, well saved lads!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album !
01 - Lost In the Echo - 3'25
L'introduction électro de Lost In the Echo est superbe... vraiment bien foutue.
02 - In My Remains - 3'20
03 - Burn It Down - 3'50
04 - Lies Greed Misery - 2'27
Titre très électro, Mike rappe, puis Chester crie. J'aime beaucoup, et le "You did it to yourself" rappellera à certains "You try to take the best of me, go away" sur A Place for My Head ou encore "Shut up (when I'm talking to you)" sur One Step Closer.
05 - I'll Be Gone - 3'30
06 - Castle of Glass - 3'25
I'm only a crack in this castle of glass" répété plusieurs fois.
07 - Victimized - 1'46
C'est juste magnifique quand Mike chante "It's the worst kind of pain I've known".
09 - Skin To Bone - 2'48
Il me fait un peu penser à I'll Be Gone.
10 - Until It Breaks - 3'43

5.0 out of 5 stars Buen álbum🤘🔥❤️
A mi personalmente, me flipa.
Por éste precio, ni te lo pienses.
