A judge placed the former chief of Bolivia’s armed forces on house arrest Tuesday after authorities accused him of funneling government money to himself, state media reported.
Authorities arrested retired Gen. Alvin Anaya Kippes on Monday and charged him with illicit enrichment, dereliction of duty and abuse of influence.
Prosecutor Harry Suaznabar said he planned to appeal the judge’s decision, arguing that Anaya was a flight risk and could attempt to obstruct the investigation, the state-run ABI news agency reported.
An investigation revealed that between 170,000 and 235 bolivianos ($24,000 to $35,600) were diverted from earmarked reserves to Anaya monthly during his tenure, ABI reported. Authorities accuse him of receiving $729,000 from reserve funds.
Anaya was chief of Bolivia’s armed forces from 2000 to 2002.
