Apparently, Rob Ford’s policy director, Mark Towhey—widely referred to as the mayor’s Rasputin—got hold of the latest issue of Toronto Life last night. After hunkering down to read (we assume) Marci McDonald’s cover story on Ford’s mayoral tenure to date, “The Incredible Shrinking Mayor,” Towhey took to Twitter to share his thoughts. Just before 10 p.m., he broadcast the following message: “Finished May issue of Toronto Life, now plan to spend rest of night just hanging out, being evil.” Aha! Just as we suspected (wink, wink). This is actually an insult to Rasputin who, contrary to the myths that became history, advocated equal rights for the severely oppressed Jews of Czarist Russia. As antisemitism was government policy, this was considered nearly treasonous so the aristocracy and clergy fabricated stories to discredit him. Many innocent people died because of the Czar’s policies, yet Rasputin never harmed nor killed a soul in his life.

Rasputin’s advocacy of equal rights for Jews is mentioned in nearly every biography, from his daughter’s to his murderer’s, whether with admiration or derision.
