Edgar Sosa improved his record to 44W-7L, 27KO's by stopping the overmatched Roilo Golez (13-8, 5KO's), winning via TKO in round seven and retaining his WBC international flyweight title. Sosa, who was coming off of a unanimous decision loss against pound-for-pound fighter Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (83-3, 44KO's) in October of 2011, was groomed to look good in this bout.
The natural 106-pounder Golez had to move up two weight divisions and was notified of the bout on December 25, 2011, giving him only two weeks to train for the fight. Golez was well aware that he took the fight on short notice, but felt he couldn't pass up the opportunity. A day prior to the fight, Golez also told this writer that he got sick due to the cold weather in Mexico.
The fight started with Golez trying to box, which seemed to work for a brief moment, however it was all Sosa from round two on. Golez was game, but took a beating from Sosa, who kept coming forward most of the fight as Golez did not have a jab to keep him off of him. The lack of training for Golez was evident, losing steam and movement as the fight went on. Referee Guadalupe Garcia stopped the fight when Golez was trapped on the ropes taking a barrage of unanswered punches.
The more experienced Edgar Sosa is most notable for beating Brian Viloria in the past, winning the WBC world light flyweight title and successfully defending it a total of eleven times. Sosa is also known for having fought the IBF world light flyweight champion Ulises Solis twice.
Did the Wonjongkam loss take a mental toll on Sosa? From the looks of it, Sosa needed an overwhelming advantage to win this fight, making it look like he lost confidence after his last defeat. The boxing community may have expected too much from the veteran Sosa, but in reality, Sosa cherry picked an opponent who was two divisions below and gave him only two weeks to train. And yes, it took Sosa seven rounds to stop Golez on his feet in this "wannabe" comeback fight.
