CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Marcus Glover has a Christmas present for his new hometown: jobs.

The New Orleans transplant and general manager of Cleveland's Horseshoe Casino announced today that he's accepting applications for 750 casino positions in 40 different job areas.

To apply for one of the jobs, which range from security officers to chefs, cashiers to slot machine supervisors, you must submit an application online at http://www.HorseshoeCleveland.com.

There's a pay range for each position, and starting salaries are listed on the web site. For example, security officers start at $12 an hour, beverage and buffet supervisors at $30,000 a year, and those who oversee slot machines will earn at least $39,000 annually.

Full-time positions offer a complete benefits package, including medical, dental and vision insurance, tuition reimbursement and a 401K retirement plan.

"We're looking for personality," said Glover, a Caesars Entertainment Corp. executive. "We're looking for upbeat and positive attitudes, for people who have an ability to interact with strangers and provide excellent customer service.

"Some of that we'll train, but we need a lot of those characteristics to be inherent in the individual."

You must be at least 21 years old and have an active telephone number and email address. Cuyahoga Community College is offering free computer and internet access as well as classes on resume building and job interviewing.

Experience is not required, but may be helpful in certain jobs. Positions will be closed as they are filled, said Karen Kaminski, a lifelong Clevelander who recently took over as head of human resources for the casino.

"The message this time around is apply early," Kaminski added. "As we screen and identify the requisite number of applicants who are going to move forward, we'll take that position down."

The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland, a full-fledged Las Vegas-style casino, will be located downtown on four floors of the former Higbee Department Store, the place where generations of Clevelanders shopped and where Ralphie asked Santa for a Red Ryder BB gun in the movie "A Christmas Story."

This second wave of hiring follows an earlier round, begun in September, where Glover's staff picked 650 people from among more than 12,000 applicants to oversee table games and deal cards. Those people began a 12-week training course last week.

How to apply

Cleveland's Horseshoe Casino officially hung a "Help wanted" sign today for 750 positions. Here's what you need to know:

* Applications must be submitted online at www.HorseshoeCleveland.com.

* The casino is looking to fill positions in 40 areas, including administrative support, cashiers, oversight of slot machines, guest services, marketing, security, finance, and food and beverage.

* Candidates are encouraged to apply early. Job postings will be removed from the website once the requisite number of applicants have been screened and scheduled for job interviews.

* For many positions, no experience is necessary.

* For so-called "nongaming" positions, those that don't touch money, you can be hired with a criminal record. Officials will consider hiring people with blemishes on their records on a case-by-case basis.

You must:

* Be 21 years of age or older.

* Have an active telephone number and email address.

* Hold a high school diploma or GED.

* Be able to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.

* Be willing to submit to pre-employment requirements including a drug test, criminal background check and other regulatory requirements.

Cuyahoga Community College's Career Centers will offer free computer and Internet access. Tri-C also will offer free r sum writing and interview workshops in December and January for casino applicants.

To register, call 1-888-855-3098 or go to www.tri-c.edu/casinos.

Today's announcement also is a giant step forward for the casino in its goal to open by late March. Today, Glover's staff numbers roughly 20. In four months, it will be about 1,600.

It's also a second down payment by Dan Gilbert on his promise to create thousands of new, permanent jobs at the casinos voters approved for him to build in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Gilbert's Rock Gaming LLC is partnering with Caesars on the projects.

Those who apply online will receive a message acknowledging their application. If you advance, you'll get a telephone call from a screener before you are invited for an in-person interview in January. Conditional job offers will be made to people at that interview, though you won't start work until March.

The majority of positions are considered "non-gaming" by state regulators, meaning people with criminal backgrounds can be hired. People with blemishes on their record will be considered on "case by case basis," casino officials said.

A resume is not required, but casino officials encouraged people to submit one with their application.

Said Glover, "This gets one step closer to our grand opening in March. There's been a lot of excitement and a large buildup, a lot of us saying what we expect to happen. This actually allows people to judge us on our actions and not on what we've been saying."
